What is the difference between Platinum and White Gold?

All gold comes out of the ground yellow; it is the natural colour of the pure metal. To make yellow gold turn into white gold we have to add other metals, or alloys, to make it white. For 18ct white gold we mix 750 parts yellow gold with 175 parts Palladium and 75 parts Silver. So, three quarters of white gold is yellow gold, and the other quarter is metal that makes it white.

Platinum is a different metal entirely. The metal comes out of the ground white and is only mixed with a small amount of alloy such as Palladium or Iridium to increase its hardness for jewellery. The platinum we use in our jewellery is ninety-five percent Platinum and five percent Palladium. The purity of our Platinum Jewellery gives it strength and lustre.

Platinum is denser than gold. Technically the specific gravity of 18ct yellow gold is 15.05 while the specific gravity of Platinum is 21.5. So, for two articles of jewellery that are the same in all respects other than one is made from 18ct yellow gold and the other is made from platinum, the piece of jewellery made from platinum will be thirty percent heavier.

But what does this mean for you as a wearer?

Because of this density, Platinum has a soft silvery white colour with a delicate almost ethereal lustre. It is a truly magical white metal.

Also, because of this density, Platinum is strong. It will not let go of itself. A piece of Platinum jewellery will last a lifetime, probably two.

If there are any short comings to platinum the first would be weight. Platinum earrings can feel quite heavy. The second would be bumps. While Platinum is immensely strong it is not hard and platinum rings will lose their lustre due to the micro bumps that occur with everyday wear.
